The recall is a response to the August 2017 fire in Michigan where Ford claimed that the electric vehicle caught fire due to a “failure in the battery compartment.”
Ford initially blamed the battery overheating, but later said it was the ignition coil that was to blame.
The company has also released a statement about the recall saying that it was a “system error” that resulted in a “critical” battery failure.
Ford has not commented on the recall yet, and has not yet issued any safety advisories.
Ford’s Focus SUV caught on fire on August 24 in the Ford F-150 pickup in Flint, Michigan, as the vehicle was being towed to a Ford dealership.
A man suffered severe burns, and at least three others were hospitalized.
